I died today
All I miss is your smell
I died today
Pretended I fell down a well
But really I leapt, jumped, dove headfirst
I wanted so desperately to reintegrate with the earth
This ground we walk upon with so many bones underneath
We start out looking for rocks and end up finding teeth

I died today
And nothing changed
I still miss you
And I somehow still feel pain
I thought the water would make me clean and new
Drown me gently like a petal succumbing to its dew
But instead it was messy, frothy and loud
I died today and honestly I’m not feeling very proud

Perhaps tomorrow I will do it differently
Find a grander finale—something less finicky
But wait, what does this bone of a hand next to me have to say:
“You died today and you will sadly stay that way.”
