The Perfect Girl

You noticed when she didn’t look as perfect as everyone else and
didn’t hesitate to call her out
You noticed when she ate a full meal and
then called her names that can haunt
like a weed you’ve been trying to get rid of for years
but still comes back no matter what
You noticed when she looked happy and
thought it would be a good idea to turn that smile
into tears
You noticed when she didn’t have a flat stomach
or maybe she did, but she had a flat chest and
that was never enough
You noticed when she didn’t understand something
during class so you mocked her, poked at her, and joked
You didn’t notice she was trying her best
You didn’t notice when she skipped every meal
You didn’t notice when her smile wasn’t real
You didn’t notice when your so-called joke,
was never funny
You didn’t notice when her short sleeve shirts
turned too long
You didn’t notice...
And yet, you wonder why the “perfect” girl you once knew
is gone
