26 Years

On this day,
When skies turned from grey to blue
Then back again in ominous hue
On this day
When the people of this land danced
In celebration of two scores; the dragon, St George
While battles being waged tarnished the backdrop
And made victory soiled
On this day
When a town library, whilst holding history within
Witnessed dark history without
On this day
When arguments ceased
Fun buses stood still, sudden unity increased
On this day
When representation,
Through a challenge to democracy, faced cessation
When history
After lurking in the shadows for 26 years
Unwanted, uncalled for reappears
On this day,
When future promise died, when hope was denied,
When disregard was, as too often is, shown to life
On this day
A mother, a wife, a daughter taken without choice
On this day freedom lost a voice
