3 AM

I awoke to the song of a blinker;
my eyes adjusted to the black.
He drove like he was late
to his shift but he never
worked an hour past
midnight. Words left my mouth
softly, as if I were afraid.
He hesitated to respond,
unsure if he wanted me
to know. You’ll see.
I scanned the road. Not a single
sign to spoil the surprise.
A street lamp.
The radio buzzed. It’s strange
how the dark changes everything.
He said, tonight was no different,
even though it was.
I didn’t remember if I said it aloud
or just in my head.
It shouldn’t have mattered.
We sat in silence.
I kept on waiting for the destination
Only the radio buzz,
an occasional conversation. they never lasted.
