tragicomedy in Vermont

Yesterday our house burned down.
Today is Dad’s birthday.
And all I can think about is
how funny it must have been to see my dad running
up our icy driveway, carrying a sloshing fish tank full of two very-old goldfish who swapped aghast drop-jaws with one another as they floated around in their surreal quiet, blinking
and how funny it must have been to hear mom and dad
who never yell at each other out loud
yelling “get the fish!” and
yelling back “we don’t even like the fish” and
yelling “the tank is too heavy” and
yelling “just pour some water out!” and
yelling “but we just got the rugs cleaned!”

Someone called mom
to say she was bringing some groceries.

But where would they go?
