A Better Version

I am a poor black man
who was born of low degree
I have a gifted daughter
a more superior version of me
Tried to raise her as the son I never had
which was very naïve on my part
Only wanted to give her the best of me ---
a gentle toughness and courage of heart
She is a reflection of myself
all that I ever desired myself to be
She is my link to the future
a glimpse of things I myself will not see
God has blessed me with a child
who, hopefully, can walk a path more righteous than I
So as I pass on the baton of life
abundant tears of joy I do now cry
