A Bird in a Cage

We have finally learned Nature's last lesson
Our dreams disfigured by a thousand fears
So we'll join the march to the Final Extinction
And cry for the children a teaspoon of tears

We've watched as humanity assaulted the earth
As it burned all the books and broke all the rules
As it unfastened our future and betrayed us at birth
And abandoned everything we thought we were worth

We still want to know why we were given the chance
To learn how to live, to make our own tools
To grow and evolve and face circumstance
To ignore all the gossip and hide from the fools

So we sit and we wait for whatever comes next
The past hasn't taught us a thing
Our imagination falters, our mind is perplexed
And the bird in the cage doesn't sing
