A Cheap Candle

How wealthy the sweet little flame
shooting gold down through her tall
cylindrical nest.

How she stirs, patient little poet,
on the waxy kitchen table
yet keeps in quick step,
inspired as a young bonfire
drinking in browned newsprint.

Subtle her heat
yet how brilliant the warmth
she brings to our meal
cucumbers, yellow beetroot,
heirloom tomatoes, all golden and fanning.
