A Clear Black Night

There's a clear black night, moon calm and bright.
Setting red light from the sun
recycled at night by the pale yellow one.
Distant specks - points of light
are stars hanging patient and quiet.

Still shadows from the cypress trees
Spanish moss flows in the breeze
Long beards blow above
the green water of the marsh.
Owls float and glide
On the summer sky
Wings.slice the air like a scythe

The bass of the bull frogs
sound off loud and strong-
like the voice of Louis Armstrong
Out of the dark of the marsh
come the songs of the swamp.
Onto your mind they will make a mark.

For ages, this place has been,
and will always
be stay the same
