A Country’s Need

Watch the children while they play
Before you look the other way
Before you pick someone to hate
Before you seal another fate
The black man hates the white man's skin
The white man hates him back again
We like to think that we're not wrong
To try and help would take too long
People die we start to care
For a moment try to share
A homeless family's broken dream
Nothing works or so it seems
We stop and pray to God above
But what our country needs is love

This Poems Story

I am seventy-one years old and I suffer from Parkinson's disease. Even though I can't write neatly anymore, I feel good when someone has a good reaction to what I have written. This poem was written during the LA race riots many years ago, but I think that it has a good message for now, as it did when I wrote it. Mostly I have written song lyrics, but I am proud of this poem.
