A Crack in the Old Wooden Door
Look you now and see the warning,
This grim crack upon the Old Wooden Door,
That needs high attention and rapid repair,
Before it shatters both bolt and core.
This slight crack, if left alone and ignored,
Will be thy sworn Enemy with ax and tongue,
Who will use thy laws that They hath made,
To slay our rights and have thee hung.
Please, I say to you, listen to these wise words,
These words whose truth strike harsher than steel,
For if the bolt breaks and the hinges are torn,
There will be no creaking to warn thy last meal.
