A Diamond in the Rough

My Dearest Lover,

You are my diamond shining through a starry night.
You are my pearl glistening beneath the sands of life.
You are my ruby rare.
Life--so hard and unfair
Life with all its lessons to be learned
and rules to be broken.
Pity to have met so late,
but blessed to have found you, my soul mate.
Life places such restrictions and protocols
and mere appearances conjure scandals
and apparitions in the night
on backroads to love
but all is not well above.
To thine own self--true be
and conscious free.
