A First Responder’s Redoubt

In the dark of the night
As the city sleeps
A fierce war goes on
A war that does not cease

A battle for life
Against the cold hands of death
Men and women struggle
Many hold their breath

We respond to the call
Each and every time
We run towards the struggles
The screams and the cries

The lights and sirens flash
Emergencies never end
911 never sleeps
But we always lend our hands
