A Hostage Daughter
Is freedom to fly on an angel’s wings
gazing down upon a town that ne’r sings?
Or could I find it with feet still on land
in a forest where oppression is banned?
Shall I say that I am shackled to thee?
Nay, merely bound up like a book should be.
Desperately I’m trying to sever
myself from thy past chapters forever,
but this blood of mine hath told me I shan’t
‘cause to separate flesh and blood I can’t.
What if this poison my heart could betray?
Perhaps I shall find the strength one bright day.
Liberty, a state I’ve never been in,
for I’m a captive of another’s sin.
