A Moon in Darkness

In the tranquil forest, far far away
The birds chirped their melodic song
The moss grew damp and green
While the stream gently ran along

But I ran through the forest
Hands firmly in my ears
My vision blurred by sobbing eyes
I was ready to embrace my fears

When I turned around, I wasn't aghast
I saw above my head a crystal moon
Surrounded by darkness and emptiness
Why was it dark ever so soon?

The darkness made me content
But I was not pleased with the moon's allure
I looked for faults and flaws in the moon
Something that would make it not so pure

So I started counting
Each crater
Each uneven hill
Each traveling crack
Each time I have been hit
Each time they left behind a scar
A bruise that will never remit
