A Pearl’s Lost

I spied a stone upon a beach,
It's beauty caught my eye.
I could not help but note it's charm
As I was passing by.
I thought, like love, it soon would fade
Succumb to time's decay.
I gave a frown and threw it down,
Then turned and walked away.
Then I remember having done
The very same with you,
And if I were to have you back,
I knew what I must do,
But when I walked back to the beach,
There stood a smiling man.
"A Shiny pearl!" he said to me
My stone lay in his hand.
'Twas then I realized my sin
As I wept by the bay.
You had been my precious gem...
I've thrown my pearl away.
