A Shadow of Another

She thinks of him as she flips through the pages of a magazine.
She thinks of him as she walks down her suburban streets.
She thinks of him as she lays alone in bed.

He lays beside another in bed.
He thinks of only her as he flips through the pages of magazines.
He walks hand and hand with her as he walks down his city streets.

What intrigues me about this man
I will never know.
Is it the way he talks?
The way he walks?
Or the way his breath
hits the side of my face
and makes me shiver all over?

I want to let go but his strong hold on me
will not allow me to pull away from his existence.
The very thought of not looking
into his deep brown eyes terrifies me.

I wonder if he will ever know that the shadow he thought was his,
was really me.
