A Ship, a Land, Some Future

A cracked whip,
slaves with brothers and sisters-
slewed side to side.

Victims bend
beneath the pale sun
on a carelessly shaped world.
Birds fly above,

like dreaming angels.
Below,
one man murmurs
the supplications
of his people.

Later, gods
chide oppressors
with civil unrest, and
we still assume
we know the outcome
to his prayers.
