A Slave’s Whisper

“Beware that fame is fleeting”
said the slave into the ear
of Caesar proud and noble
Triumph’s trumpet blasts so near.

And though long dead Rome’s tenure
never fails to earn repeat
of proud man’s destination
and the clay that makes his feet.

So clothe yourself in humble garb
and gentleness of hand,
for nobler robes have never sat
the shoulders of a man.
