A Soldier’s Cross

As I walked along my eyes caught sight of a solider's cross
A well made marker in memory of a brave young soul lost
The boots were worn and the rifle covered in rust
Hand painted letters on the stock said, "In God we trust"
The helmet tipped as a sign of respect
A final salute it's meant to reflect
A pair of dog tags rattle in the wind
Never sent to his next of kin
As I stood there feeling sadness and pride
Forever he stands guard over this lonely hillside
