A Waiting World

The clock ticks, its hands strike true.
The smell of coffee in the air.
The quiet ambiance of clinking silverware.
The room is warm, sound, safe.
The clock lingers, waiting for you to finish your book.
The last slice of pie sits on the plate.
The check waits to be picked-up.
The firetruck wails by.
The telephone rings.
Lunch break is over.
Ticking of the clock resumes.
There are things to do.
The World will not wait.
Not even for you.
