Above and Below

How long has it been
since there was nothing but darkness,
above and below?
Could that time be now--
when everyone looks straight forward
at what they want to see
not what is there
because they don't understand
which direction is up and which is down?

In all this darkness,
above and below,
the sun is still there.
Do you see it?
Not everyone can see now;
maybe the light isn't what we need
or what we deserve.

It has been a terrible, long time
since humans slept by the light
of a blazing fire,
of the orb of connection.
Now, we are here
living in the dark
echoing through the empty of nothing,
above and below.
