Adrift

In perpetual, apathetic wonder
Always searching, never knowing
Dreams forever on the horizon
Fade slowly into the haze of the setting sun
Alluring and waltzing, the fantasies of night
Surround me, console me
And awaken the bright-eyed boy within
Long lost, the sweet child emerges so briefly
A single precious moment frozen in time
Until one by one
The fantasies of night abandon the boy without warning
Playfully following the stars above
Forever young, forever free
As far better companions they make than me
The boy recedes in tears
Leaving me to face the morning light alone
While the ageless song of the sea still beckons
The play of dolphins, a fleeting memory of innocence lost
Adrift once again in the dream of a life lived well
And hopes for tomorrow, but time will never tell
