All Because

Your first word to me was hello. I looked at you.
You looked at me down in your arms.
I smiled and you smiled back.
All because you said hello.
The years pass on and hello turns into
"How are you?" and "Haven't you gotten taller?"
I smile and you smile back.
All because you said hello.
The leaves fall and snow drifts on to the ground,
"Haven't you gotten taller?" turns into
"So you're another year older today, huh?"
I smile, and you smile back. All because you said hello.
My birthday passes and Christmas Eve rolls around.
We sit on the couch.
I smile and you smile back.
All because you said hello.
A few months later, I find out you said hello to God.
God smiles and you smile back.
All because you said hello.
You said hello to me, but not goodbye.
You didn't say goodbye because that means you're parting.
You said hello to God and I,
Because that means there's a new beginning.
The last time I saw you, I smiled at you and you smiled back.
All because you said hello.
