Almost Gone

On a Saturday evening stroll,
You paused, your turned.
You stared into my soul,
You paused, you turned.
We continued our walk,
And you paused, and you turned.
You told me you were sorry,
You've failed, you've learned.
But I had forgiven you,
For your death.
Absurd.
For you had just told me,
When you paused and turned,
That you now have cancer,
Or at least, that's what you heard.
You had one more month left,
So I paused and turned.
I lowered my head,
I've lost, I've yearned.
I told you I loved you,
And this love, you earned.
I slowly raised my head,
and paused and turned
To say one last goodbye,
while my heart slowly burns.
