Almost Sacred Poetry
I steadily approach the poems before me
Holding my breath so as not to blow them away.
I keep myself focused and solemn as I write
Remembering what things I must forget.
I am overwhelmed by the scent of almost sacred poetry
And I try very hard not to ruin it by being myself.
I try not to darken it by eclipsing it with my shadow.
I try not to dampen its words with silly tears.
When I finish, I find that I am drained,
More confused than I was before,
And my soul has gained weight.
That is what makes poetry so hard:
If we are not careful with it,
We will kill it,
And if we are very careful with it,
It will kill us.
