Amplifying Emily

Empty words
are like amplified
junk DNA when the primers
fail and there’s no signal.
You can flail around for days
In that anomalous mess, second guessing
every step of why the gel
didn’t work this time,
and what to do to fix it.
In my self-inflicted solitude
I remember you from high school -
your curiously private
laboratory, where you
also mined the sublime
hidden message in feathers.
Amplifying hope instead of genes,
you achieved the infinite reaction –
transcending both beyond words,
through the persistence
of a little bird.
