An Honor

If I gathered all the wisdom
From memories on a shelf,
My biggest weakness illuminated
Is carrying my heart outside myself.

If I compiled all my knowledge
Into one lesson to be learned,
I would reach the understanding
That trust is only earned.

To give this honor freely
Is a detriment to self,
Because if trust is easily given
There’s no need to prove oneself.

Love is truly precious
The only gift that can be free,
But my trust is an honor
That must be proven to me.

You’ll know that we’ve arrived
At something truly grand,
When not only will you hold my heart,
My trust as well will be in your hands.
