An Ode To My Father

You tell me everything is going to be okay
But I watched as those words tore through your teeth and bled out your gums
Do you really expect me to believe that when everything you’ve ever done has destroyed us?
My therapist says I need to move on
That I should treat you like the gum on the bottom of my shoe and tear you straight off
Here’s the thing though
I love you so much more than the gum I want to get away from
Every time I’ve pulled you apart from ruining this family completely
I’ve loved you
Every time you’ve whispered sweet nothings to my mother about not having a mind of my own
I’ve loved you
And every time you avoided me like the plague
I’ve loved you
Is it too much to ask that you love me too?
