Army Green Jacket

I remember her army green jacket
the over-sized one she got from her older brother
some kid found it hidden the trash
at that truck stop off highway 6
all covered in dirt and blood
people had to face the truth
instead of telling her parents
that she’d probably just wandered off
or she was simply at a friends house
and forgotten too check in
we weren't allowed to play after sunset anymore
then a hunter found her bare body covered in sheets
strewn across the ground as if she were garbage
she’d been taken from the world
the innocence of the neighborhood was stolen

they found the guy a couple months ago
after the years of fruitless searching
had a bullet proof vest on as they escorted him
tears running down his face
not because he was sorry for what he did
but sorry for getting caught after all this time
that demon in human skin left his mark
when the street lamps switch on as the light fades
the cul-de-sac's are deserted
