September passed the baton to a surprised October
looking like it just got caught
with it’s leaves pulled down a bit too early.

Across the way
Canadian Geese find an angle and work they’re way
down to an evening tangle
with cutthroat competition from groundhogs and such...

Such a noisy frenzy for a mere amount
of yellow kernel fuel
loaded and ready
poised and steady
for another take off and landing
take off and landing...

Toward crusty fields slowly turning
the last pages of summer
onto adolescent chapters of
a new season
where awkwardness strides
looks and tangles with...
a surprised October.
