Ashes To Ashes

Hiding in closets, Drawing on walls
Shame isn't reserved, For the ones who did wrong
They made their choice, They tossed me away
I tried to stay, It only left me with pain

Excuses unfold, Nary apology made
The only choice was to crawl, coul'nt walk on away
Knew the words I should say, but the sound never came
No universal truth to guide night into day

Ashes to ashes, Sink in the river
Mire and mud washed away
My own grace, My deep love
Never came from this place
Trusting one God, same as you
The one that lives and loves and shows me the way

My assigned defenders
Never saw past their own nose
Blood pouring from faces, Didn’t stop her at all
A child thrown through a cradle, No place for a babe

Money ain't love, no matter what you have learned
Every day that goes by, seems that's all that remains
She loves only one, and it's no other than
She, herself, her own face in the glass

Ashes to ashes, Sink in the river
Mire and mud washed away
My own grace, My deep love
Never came from this place
Trusting one God, same as you
The one that lives and loves and shows me the way

The blood running through my veins
Is the force of the holy name
My lady in lilac, Carried me for a ways
Led me through, Til I could escape

She had a guardian, And he's gone now too
I held him in his dying hours , and heard his last phrase
He went to her in the arms of the Lord
My safety net gone, But I can hold my own

Ashes to ashes, Sink in the river
Mire and mud washed away
My own grace, My deep love
Never came from this place
Trusting one God, same as you
The one that lives and loves and shows me the way

I found safety again, in the arms of a man
He didn't promise anything, but to be truthful and brave
In the eyes of a child, that's all you really need
And I love him, and I'll try to give him the same

Ashes to ashes, Sink in the river
Mire and mud washed away
My own grace, My deep love
Never came from this place

Ashes to ashes, Sink in the river
Mire and mud washed away
My own grace, My deep love
Never came from this place
Trusting one God, same as you
The one that lives and loves and shows me the way
