Ashes to Ashes

It occurred to me that maybe we are not
Fighting battles for burning cities
And that maybe beneath all of the ash
There is something simply incandescent in loss
To resurrect the way a phoenix crawls
From the rubble of its own inferno
With bitten tongues
We can learn to burn with our city
To be enveloped by the blaze
To fracture and crumble into nothing
To arise in the smoke with our eyes burning like coals
And it occurred to me that maybe even after all of this
We can find rebirth
In destruction
