Because You’re Not There

A tiny apartment
You being there made it a home
Now you are gone
It is so lonely
Because you're not there
You're rickety table and uneven chair
There they sit unoccupied-empty
Because you're not there
I cannot feel the warmth or your love
The touch of your embrace
Because you're not there
The waves of the sea still crash endlessly onto the shore
Yet I shan't look for sand dollars anymore
Because you're not there
I see you waving goodbye
There you are, atop the stairs
But it's only a trick of the light
And of the light in my mind's eye
Because you're not there
