Bells

Bells ringing, slicing the air
Dispelling elementals, spirits of the air.
Dispelling the darkness hidden in the heart.

Monks pulling the rope to clang the bells.
Matins, morning, evening prayers.
Reverberations from the heart
Going into all the world.

Bells ring
But with electronic motors
Or digital sound-
a pleasantry after meeting.

As the peels of bell tones bounce over the streets
Dance between the buildings,
The sound does the same as it has
Since the beginning-
Clattering away elementals, demons, darkness,
Though most are unaware
in this concrete,
Cell phone, motor, material, natural world.
