But a Dream

Welcome home to darkened walls,
and chilly corners where
fires no longer burned on the hearth.
Sadness crept around dinners shared in joyful times;
doors aged with memories-
closed one last time upon the world of us.
The lingering breath of your fragrance
held me to that moment.
Longing dragged my heart to the open window
of our garden path.
I felt your romance-
my hand in yours under rainy nights,
and many sunsets that moved us to love.
I came home to you,
one last look at your soul, entwined with mine-
I found but a dream,
cold in a distant past.
