Can we only appreciate the stars
If we have scraped in hard scrabble
And raised our eyes up
From the deepest canyons of despair?
Loved deeply because we have lost profoundly.
Understood the pain of others
After being stung by judgment and neglect.
Can we truly love life
Only if we have lost our way
Beauty denied in the blind rush
Of the everyday?
Or Harvested laughter's bounty only
When it has been watered by tears.
The mountains find meaning in the valleys
We climb, lungs screaming, hands bleeding
Standing tall on peaks of accomplishment
Looking down at deep shadows left behind
Craning forward and seeing more ahead forever
And loving the journey
All the more for it.
