Candy-Coated Solitude

Caramel dreams,
candy-coated screams,
cotton candy clarity,
and Coke
bottle blues.
Smoke swollen with sorrow,
savoring secret solitude.
Melting matter mindlessly
underneath.
Who are you?
Bittersweet candy girl,
spiked with salt and sulphur.
A pure white devil,
who desires to live harder.
Comfortably ignorant,
yet tainted with truth.
Bound by heaven's blood forever,
I will not lose you.

This Poems Story
This poem was written for a class assignment twenty-eight years ago; I was eighteen. I still have the sheet of paper it was first penned on, now yellowed and frayed. I've kept it as a reminder of the first time I felt my voice come through on a page. It was inspired by my sister's struggle and how I could relate. This is my first submission to be published, because the message unlike the page will never age.
