Canvas of Your Heart

You know you're in too deep
When the signatures of others
Mar the canvas of your heart
When the small dents
Turn to scratches and tears
And finally the canvas
Is barely held together by
Ragged threads desperately hanging on
Relentlessly you try to sew it back together
Except you've misplaced
Your needle and thread
And your eyes burn with realization
And your head aches with truth
And dishonesty
And you plunge your fingers
Into your chest
To keep the canvas from splitting
But you're immobilized
And as soon as your fingers leave the cavity of your soul
It falls to pieces in mangled chunks
And the only part of it
That is still discernible
Are the signatures of others
That mar the canvas of your heart
