She was with him when he died.
His eyes flickered open, unseeing,
Then closed, and he was gone.
Reservoir of all her faith,
Knower of her soul,
Friend of so many years,

Two lives: one to settle into memory,
One to be reimagined and lived anew.
While somewhere deep
Within the labyrinthine curlicues of her brain,
She heard a door slam shut.
Two words, echoed, richocheted,
Caromed around the room
What now? What now?
