Changing My Story

I do not know if I should try to impress you,
or if I should pretend that your opinion
does not affect me.
I do not think I am smart enough for you,
despite others ensuring me that is not so.
I do not know what to do with or about you,
but I think, that I wish, you would initiate
whatever is going to grow between us.

I know you are a gentleman,
of that I am sure. But just because you call me,
does not mean when you bring me home
I will kiss you at my door.
But I might.
I know you are a genius,
and I do not think you are aware
how much I admire your intelligence,
the most brilliant man I have known.
I know you hate poetry,
and I wonder if you would be upset
because this poem is about you.
But you must know what they say about people like me.
About poets.
About writers.

If you love a writer
and they do not write about you -
unfortunately, it is true -
they do not love you.
