Chant in Rhyme

The demons of the wind
have given the child fear.
Her father can do nothing
merely sit near.
Reasons are sounds only
to a two year old's ear.

We adults get frightened:
car demons, sickness; devils of death
are always quite near.
By fears we will be chased
all the times of our life.

Mum looks at Dad
across the dinner table;
the two-year old laughs
with her elbows propped up high.

The meal of the family
the ceremony of care;
three sit together,
while outside
the wind sounds near.
