Childish Phantasmagoria

barefoot on a summer night in the playground
you, fantastic phantasm, phantom of the urban jungle
draw me into the delicate depths
of a child’s sublime stupor
warm air blankets your brazen, bambino skin
and the safety mats cradle your shuffling feet
you, midnight marauder, making moves
to steal the night
leave behind magic
as I chase your fleeting flesh flushed with soul
rapt with eternal rebellion
relentlessly floating about in slow darkness
you, champion, keen on continuing, this time capturing, captivating, conquering all
agree to settle on the lonesome swings with me
together we sway serenely under the amber Stuyvesant streetlights
and watch our shadows tremble and merge sensually
you, precious puppeteer, cast a play
a charming arrangement
of fingers tenderly laced, of tenuous grasps, and tenuous things
that quickly quiver and melt away

together we conduct a childish phantasmagoria
with no worries that tomorrow
not even our shadows will share
a beautiful nightly delusion again
