Concrete Love

love is fleeting
and she found that she was not wrong in the way she loved
with all her heart
but wrong in loving people
who bear both the capability and the tendency to leave
she learned it was better to love the things that were concrete
so she loved the mountains in the distance
and the books on her bookshelf
she loved the moon and its neighboring stars
and the sea and its crashing waves
the fault lied not in the method but in the object
so she loved those lasting things with all her heart
and she shut the rest of the world away,
when she was ready to try love again
she found that fear had left a lock on the door she had shut
but she loved what she could with all that she had left to give
