Startled awake from a dreamless sleep
In their home so small and dark,
Those painted wings bead wild and confused
Somewhere between my stomach and heart.
That violent flutter has scattered the seeds
Of new life, which begins to sprout.
The petals unfurl and before I know it,
A smile has bloomed from the inside out.
As the sun draws closer, the smile grows wider;
Feeding on his warmth and light.
If my petals could reach out and hold him down,
There would never be a night.
But the forces of nature pull at his rays,
For they need his radiance too.
The full-bloom smile gently fades
Until the next day starts anew.
