Dear Dad

I just thought you should know
what I've accomplished
with my illness these three years,
since I was a junior in high school.
I had to catch up on two semesters of work
in one semester, and I barely graduated.
It was stressful because I was a good student
and my health was holding me back.
I wanted your support, but you weren't there.

I just thought you should know
that I've almost finished my first quarter
of college, and without your help.

I just thought you should know
that I'm on my way to becoming a neonatal nurse,
to be able to care for these special little babies.

I just thought you should know
I've always hoped you would be there
for me and give me the support I needed--
be a father figure like when you were married
to my mom when I was little.
You took care of my brother and sister,
so why couldn't you take care of me?
But I know if I showed you this letter,
you would say that you did take care of me.

I just thought you should know.
