Death by Bird Flue

death by bird flu

I woke up that morning
it was immediately clear
I'd caught some kind of virus
my first cold of the year

the typical symptoms
of the flu had appeared
but some of my symptoms
were especially weird

unbearable dry mouth
unable to speak
showing the signs of a developing beak
voice noticeably higher
body unnaturally thin
the sprouting of feathers all over my skin
nails turned to claws
scales appeared on my legs
an uncontrollable desire to go lay some eggs

the doctors were frustrated
I ignored all prescribed rest
further taxing my body
and built a huge nest

attacking my mind
soon it wouldn't belong
I could no longer relate
only break into song

insane in the end
atop a building, so high
I leaped off the ledge
convinced I could fly
