Death Grip

Her love soothes me
Surrounds me
The warnings she engraved in my mind
Keep me safe now
The way her arms used to

Childhood consisted of
Borrowed birthday money
Paid back with interest
Her new dresses, refunded the next day
I must have needed something

Pride radiated from her
Overworked body
Given the choice
I would have walked past her every time
To my father

With my tiny arms outstretched
As far as they could reach
