Depression Makes Me Sad

I read through your poem and winced at the pain
You feel that you’re losing with nothing to gain
If words can console you I offer my thought
Perhaps you can win at the battles not fought

The first step I say is start with emotion
Change it a bit and the word is devotion
Find something to cherish a cause that is true
Make sure that this word, is working for you

Now add a feeling we’ll just call it hope
Don’t change it a bit, or else you can’t cope
A quick touch of humor it must be included
To make sure your plans are never deluded

We’re now on our way, you’re starting to smile
And I’ve only been writing, for a short while
Now let us try faith, a word we will add
Replace the depression with a word we call glad

Be thankful for something, a friend or a pet
Or maybe a lover you haven’t met yet
Don’t think of the pills or ending it all
Be up to the challenge to take the great fall

For once you’re at bottom there’s only one way
A climb made with hope can start in a day
And yet while you’re climbing stop often and smile
The path to recovery will take you a while
