Desert Sunset

A slow burning sunset
Punctured by vibrant streetlights.
Pale, fluffy clouds dabbed at the wine and plum stained sky,
Trying in vain to wipe the darkness away.
The heat now was mild,
A blanket wrapped around the city.
Nostalgia and melancholy swelled,
Accentuated by his smile,
Exacerbated by his eyes.
Minutes and hours slipped from my fingers,
And as the incandescent sun slipped below the hills,
The artificial glittering of the city
Came into focus.
